Texas is certainly known more for its carnivorous cuisine than for its vegan culture, but there are exceptions to every rule, and Texas VegFest, a celebration of all things animal-product-free, will be  going down in Austin this Saturday, April 5, 2014. The event, which will take place at Fiesta Gardens from 11 AM to 6 PM, will feature everything from educational lectures to live music and more.

A wide variety of tasty veggie food will be available from popular purveyors such as Aster’s Ethiopian, Counter Culture, Hearty Vegan, Mr. Natural, Samosa Spot, and more. All food will be completely vegan, and there will be plenty of gluten-free and soy-free options. Please click here for a list of all the participating restaurants and food carts.

No festival would be complete without plenty of great live music to keep the party going, and there will be no shortage thereof at Texas VegFest, with eclectic bands The Jetsuns, The Asteroid Shop, Seven Circles, and One World (R)evolution performing, in addition to a solo set from Chazz Bessette.

In addition to the excellent speakers, healthy and cruelty-free vegan grub, and live music, there will also be various vegan-lifestyle-oriented vendors to check out, from charitable and activist organizations to clothing companies and much more. For a full list of participating vendors, please click here.

If you are going to be in the Austin area this Saturday and you are either vegan, vegetarian, or have an interest in the lifestyle, this is an event you will certainly not want to miss. We hope to see you there.

Posted by GPGarry | Posted in Drinks, Music Events, Nightlife | Posted on 27-01-2014

Lou Reed is a consummate legend of the highest degree in rock and roll, music in general, and American counterculture, having been both a member of legendary rock group The Velvet Underground as well as one of the most celebrated and respected solo artists of all time. Reed recently passed away in October of 2013 of liver failure, and Austin musicians will be paying tribute to our fallen hero this Saturday, February 1st, at the Cactus Cafe.

Among the Austin artists to be celebrating Reed’s legacy at the Cactus Cafe are such favorites as Jesse Sublett, Jon Dee Graham, The Reivers, Kacy Crowley, Why Not Satellite, Kim Simpson, Wild Seeds, Kathy McCarty, Steve Bernal and Dashiell Sublett. The event will begin at 8:30 PM, and fittingly, a portion of the funds generated will go to the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM).

Whether you are a big fan of Lou Reed, a supporter of local Austin musicians, or someone just looking to have a good time on a Saturday night, the Lou Reed Austin tribute event going down this Saturday looks like an event not to be missed. Chick Corea and Bela Fleck This Sunday

Posted by GPGarry | Posted in Music Events, Nightlife | Posted on 15-01-2014

If you love jazz, fusion, bluegrass, acoustic music, jam-band music, improvisational music, or just great music in general, you will know that Chick Corea and Bela Fleck are two of the most talented artists in all of the above genres of all time, making it quite the treat to see these two masters perform on the same stage. That is just what will occur this Sunday, January 19th at Austin’s Paramount Theatre at 8 PM.

If you are not familiar with Corea, his jazz pedigree goes back to performing with greats of the likes of Miles Davis and Stan Getz. Corea is also known for forming the seminal jazz fusion group Return to Forever in 1971. He has gone on to enjoy a long and illustrious career as one of the most respected pianists in the history of jazz. Bela Fleck is most known for his unique, genre-bending improvisational group of virtuosic musicians, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. He plays the banjo in a way that it had never been played before, and has never been played since, redefining its role in contemporary music.

You can expect to see Fleck and Corea playing jazz, classical, and bluegrass duets of the highest caliber, and the Paramount’s acoustics are perfectly suited for this intimate type of concert, meaning it should be one for the ages. Please click here for more info and to purchase tickets.

The Grammy award-winning Austin Latin-funk orchestra known as Grupo Fantasma will be bringing their unique blend of danceable music to Austin’s Long Center on Thursday, January 9th. The hometown boys would generally not play such a small venue in Austin, making this a great opportunity to see them in an intimate setting.

If you are not familiar with the group, you should get familiar quick. They are known for their high energy, crowd-pleasing performances and for backing major artists such as Prince, Maceo Parker, Spoon, GZA, and others. The event is all ages and you can buy tickets here, which you may want to do now as this could well be a sold-out show.

Music in Austin This Saturday

Posted by GPGarry | Posted in Music Events, Nightlife | Posted on 19-12-2013

Saturday, December 21 looks like it will be a busy night in Austin on the concert front, with good music to tickle the fancy of music lovers of varying tastes going down at venues throughout the ATX. Please see some of our top picks below.

8 Ball and MJG at Red 7

If you love classic hip-hop, particularly of the Southern variety, you will know that 8 Ball and MJG are true legends in the genre and you will not want to miss them performing this Saturday at Red 7. The group has not performed in Austin in many years, making this a special event for ATX hip-hop fans.

Max Bemis and Sherri DuPree at Stubb’s

Emo and pop-punk are still alive, and married couple Max Bemis (Say Anything mastermind) and Sherri DuPree (Eisley) are living proof. If you still have a little teen angst left inside, Stubb’s will be the place to be to let it out this Saturday.

Reverend Horton Heat at Emo’s

While Stubb’s has emo covered for Saturday, Emo’s will draw the rockabilly crowd. There is pretty much no figure more important in the development of modern rockabilly and psychobilly than the Rev. Horton Heat, so if that is your thing, come on down to Emo’s to experience the man and the myth himself.

12XU XXXMas Special at Beerland

Gerard Cosloy, co-owner of Matador records, also has his own local Austin label, 12XU, and this show will be a showcase of five 12XU artists giving it their all in the spirit of the naughtier side of the holiday season. With bands performing with names like Flesh Lights and Buck Biloxi and the Fucks, this one promises to live up to its sexually-charged namesake.

Gospel According to Jazz Christmas w/ Gerald Albright, Lalah Hathaway, Kirk Whalum at One World Theatre

While a band called The Gospel Truth will be performing at the 12XU XXXmas Special at Beerland, the real gospel on Saturday night will be going down at One World Theatre. Gerald Albright, Lalah Hathaway, and Kirk Whalum are some major heavy hitters, and this jazz-tinged holiday show is one that lovers of Gospel and great music in general alike will be sure to appreciate.
